Historical Brief about Higher Education in Sudan


    • Higher education in Sudan has traced back to the establishment of scientific institute in 1912 and Kitchener School of Medicine in 1924, Higher institutes at the end of 1930s. These following institutions are the basis of higher education in Sudan: 1. The Scientific institute in Omdurman (1912): This institute was established to be similar to Alazhar Alsharif and Dar Alalom in Egypt to care for religious education in Sudan, The higher department started in 1920, and the university stage began in 1975 by establishing two departments Sharia law and Arabic language and promoted to faculty of Islamic studies in 1963 then to Omdurman Islamic University in 1965.2. Kitchener School of Medicine 1924: The high schools for sciences, agriculture, veterinary, law and engineering which were established at the end of 1930s of 20th century to provide post secondary education and affiliated to government bodies, to qualify cadres needed in the field of their work. These high schools were integrated in the Memorial College of Gordon in 1945, and then later formed Khartoum African University College (Abdan College in Nigeria and Makriri College in Uganda). In independence 1956 Khartoum University College became administratively and scientifically independent and it is called University of Khartoum as the first national university in The Sudan.3. There were institutes and colleges established before independence qualifying employees in governmental bodies for two years upgraded to three years. These colleges and institutes admit the graduates of Secondary schools, these are: Faculty of health (1933), x ray institute (1936), Faculty of Forest experts, Optical institutes (1954) and Shambat agricultural institutes (1954).4. The technical education started in Sudan by establishing Khartoum Technical institute as school attached to the Ministry of public works to qualify craftsmen raising study’s years from three to four years in 1960, the development of the study requires connected it with recognized foreign levels and their students have access to sit for private certificate in Lancashire in UK. The Khartoum technical institutes are the basic of technical and technological education in Sudan which is upgraded to be The Sudan University of Science and technology in 1990.5. Cairo University, Khartoum branch was established in 1955 as the fruit of bilateral relation with Egypt, its evening study provides chance for the state’s employees to continue their university education in Faculties of Art, law and commerce. In 1993 its name changed to ALneelain University, and then enlarged by new scientific colleges.6. Besides the Technical Institute many institutes and colleges were established during the stage of national rule. These institutes and colleges affiliated to governmental units and qualifying for Diploma level (2—3 years), they are:-Vocational College (1960) to qualify and train craftsmen in different occupations (carpentry, plumb works, metal works, building ….etc)- The Institute of Music and Drama (1969) to push ahead the artistic movement in The Sudan.- Higher institute of Sport Education to qualify the teachers of physical education in secondary stage.7.The seventieth is considered great transformation in the process of higher education in Sudan. This period witnessed issuance of acts and organized bodies for higher education, the most important events of this period:7.- Establishing the Universities of Gezira and Joba (1975) as the first universities to be established in provinces aiming at linking university study with environment and fulfilling the needs of community.- Joining all institutes and colleges which were attached to Ministries and authorities to higher education and issuing their articles of association. - Setting up of some intermediate colleges and institutes with the support of World bank such as Abuharaz agricultural institutes – Abunama agricultural institutes and Mechanical Engineering college in Atbara.- Unprecedented enlargement in establishing states’ universities since the inception the national salvation revolution 1989 which the most of its achievements are : • Arbicization of study in university stage.• Establishing the new universities in states (19 governmental universities.)• Expansion in foreign and private higher education by establishing three universities and 26 Colleges and institutes.• Doubling the intake in higher education’s institutions.
